方正粗黑是专门为港台地区用字设计的，因此只有繁体字库，一些笔形结构与大陆标准有所不同。这款字体的笔画较粗，字形端庄稳重，适用于报刊、书籍的标题和广告标语。目前方正粗黑有两种封装版本，其中BIG5编码是台湾制定的字库编码规范，包含两万多字，而GB12345-90编码的字数较少，约有七千字，是在简体字码位上放置了繁体字字形。由于繁简体往往不是一一对应，所以使用时需要注意校对。
